Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are one of the many restorative treatments that dentists can use to fix up a damaged smile. Both are great options for addressing broken, decayed or missing teeth.

Dental crowns are used to protect weak teeth, repair broken teeth, cover a dental implant, or replace fillings if there is not an adequate amount of the original tooth remaining. They’re often used after a root canal procedure, and can additionally provide a cosmetic fix to misshapen or discolored teeth.

They fit over top of and completely cover the original tooth, providing strength and protection while also enhancing the tooth’s appearance. Generally, crowns are made out of porcelain or ceramic which is dyed to match the color of your other teeth, providing a completely natural look. Gold and metal alloys or acrylic might be used to cap back teeth, since these materials are extra strong.

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth. The name comes from the fact that they literally bridge the gap between your teeth — and can take the place of one or multiple missing teeth. Like dental crowns, they can be made from different materials, including porcelain, gold, and alloys.

Dental bridges are important because missing teeth can lead to many problems; making it difficult to chew, causing teeth to move out of position, and protect other teeth by properly distributing the force of your bite.

Both crowns and bridges are fixed dental prosthetics, which means that unlike dentures, they can only be put in place or removed by a professional dentist. On average, they last about five to 15 years — or even longer with good oral care and regular checkups! Once you have your dental bridge installed, you won’t need to worry about it for years.
